Scientists are increasingly concerned about the potential of thawing permafrost on a warming world.
This permanently frozen layer of soil contains enormous amounts of methane could exacerbate climate change when the gas washed out into the atmosphere.
To solve the problem, the US Army Corps of Engineers built a tunnel in the permafrost near Fairbanks, Alaska.
It allows researchers to travel through time to see how the permafrost affected Earth in the past 40,000 years.
BBC correspondent Matt McGrath environmental traveled with them.
