Each year, a total of 187 billion diapers are thrown away, but unlike bottles, cans or boxes, diapers are difficult to recycle.
However, engineers have found ways to recover the plastic and other materials they contain.
In Treviso, Italy, a pilot plant was opened with the support of the world's largest diaper manufacturer Procter & Gamble.
It is planned to offer single-layered baskets to parents throughout the city, which will then be picked up in separate garbage collections by trucks.
