Scientists use 10 billion times more light than the Sun to decipher the buried rolls when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79.
A Diamond Light Source team in Oxfordshire is working to read the manuscripts burned almost 2,000 years ago when the Roman city of Herculaneum was buried in volcanic ash.
The two complete scrolls and the four fragments belong to the Institut de France in Paris.
