Human males have developed strong facial features to protect against fighting, according to scientists.

Research at the University of Utah found that the bones of the face of the first bipedal apes australopithecines were to be later taken most likely in the areas.

Professor David carrier, the evolutionary biologist who led the study, said the features were as the need developed that increase men to fight.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast : "There was a lot going on fighting ... The males compete for females, but males probably national defense."
