An ambitious prehistoric reconstruction open to the public on 25 April.
Chauvet in the Ardèche in southern France contains some of the oldest and most remarkable petroglyphs ever found - but it was sealed by the discovery, in order to preserve this valuable technology.
Well, a replica of the cave and its spectacular paintings were built - but how does it compare with the reality?
Our science correspondent Rebecca Morelle is one of only a handful of people who can tell us, after the BBC Newsnight has had unusual access to the original cave.
