The secret of the deep sea creature that discarded like a purple socks looks was dissolved, scientists report.
The animal, named Xenoturbella is so strange that 60 years, the researchers could not find out what it was - either when driving in the family tree.
But the discovery of four new species in the Pacific has enabled scientists to infer that this animal is one of the first branches of life.
The study is published in the journal Nature .
Professor Greg Rouse, Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the US explains here why these animals are so rare.
