It's been 100 years that Albert Einstein presented his theory of general relativity, one of the pillars of modern physics, which transformed our understanding of space, time and gravity.
Most of the predictions he made in 1915, subsequently confirmed. But it remains difficult to grasp - the direct detection of gravitational waves.
Now all over the world are trying a number of observatories, to get a look at these phenomena for the first time.
BBC science correspondent Rebecca Morelle went to one of the slot machines shafts - Advanced Virgo, near Pisa, Italy.
